This special Linescape draws its inspiration from the Zhan Ziqian painting Spring Excursion, the oldest Chinese landscape painting known to have survived.

Rather than depicting the landscape directly, I wanted to translate it into line—something quieter and more distilled. The silhouette becomes a kind of gesture, held in tension across the frame. It is intended to provide an abstracted landscape for the two Tang dynasty ceramic horses to live within.

Thank you Sarah Shepard Gallery for commissioning this artwork on behalf of the Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang Collection. Thank you Hare and Arrow Arts for fabricating a bespoke curved rail for this curved wall.
