Each of my bodies of work explores the expressive potential of a single knot type. These sculptures are knotted using the classic technique of crowning. When tied with flat, ribbon-like cordage, crowning produces a crisp, squared column that can extend indefinitely. Once formed, the work is hand-manipulated for maximum delight, allowing the sculpture to shift, slide, and settle into evocative shapes—which can also be changed over time if desired. Many people recognize crowning from childhood lanyards and friendship bracelets, bringing a quiet thread of nostalgia to the work.
