Chains are industrial by nature, tied to metalwork, factories, and shipping. By covering them in fiber, I shift these objects into the realm of knotting and other textile traditions: labor practices rooted in every culture yet historically overlooked within the fine art world. The transformation turns hardware into hand-work and invites touch. Often, the Links are made in community, carrying forward a centuries-old tradition of shared making. The act of working together is central to my practice and integral to the meaning of the finished form: links connect. I developed an algorithm to map how systematically-proportioned hues interact, a way to structure choice. Thus, algorithms, math, and rule-based play become another material in the work.
The first Links work Serious Play was created in the fall of 2025 during the inaugural Eames Institute Ranch Studios Residency and was in part inspired by fellow Eames residents Dion Ceramics’ triaxial glaze tests.
